Chapter 17

For the first time in a long time, I am nervous. Nick was expected back this evening and he had sent a text, saying he needed to talk to me. All kinds of thoughts were bouncing round my mind. Has he decided that he prefers his old ways? That he’s not cut out for a one on one relationship? Has he decided that Toby and Amelia are too much of a responsibility? For the umpteenth time I look at both the time and the text. I was free today, with nothing to keep me occupied. As soon as I had received the text, I had contacted Eliza and arranged for the kids to stay with her overnight. Never one to miss out on an opportunity to have the children, she had jumped at the chance.

On a whim, I rang Ivy to see if she was free, and quickly we arranged to meet at Little Sammie’s. When I eventually made it to the café, Rayven and Cassie were also there and soon we were joined by Baby Blu.

“I’ve brought the keys to the store, if anyone’s interested in buying anything.”

In need of a plan for this evening, I decided to take Cassie up on her offer, and after we have finished our coffee, we make our way to the boutique.

“Everything okay Ivy?”

Ivy has been quiet since arriving at the coffee shop, and had not spoken since entering the boutique.

“Yes”

Ivy gave the store a quick perusal, before turning her attention back to me. In her hand, she is idly playing with a crimson and black bra set.

“What time are you expecting Fudge?”

With a shrug and a shake of my head, I am slow in my answer. Ivy’s question has me thinking of the text Fudge has sent. A text, I have not mentioned to anyone.

“I don’t know. Probably late. Why?”

“Why don’t I come back to yours?”

“Sure. I’ll pick up a bottle of wine on the way back”

As I stand back, I study Ivy, as she puts the underwear she was holding, back. I deliberately turn my attention to the other women. Together, they stand in a circle, holding out different items of underwear, laughing among themselves. Three women, happy with their choice of men.

The piercing pain in my heart, is a reminder of what I have lost. I know that what Nick and I have is far different, to what I had with Carl. Nick is all fire and passion. While Carl had been a slow burner. His passion, hidden beneath a calm exterior. Yet, like Nick, he was a volcano, once he let his emotions free.

I neither need nor want another Carl. Carl had stolen my heart at a young age, and I had not lived. Yet, without living, I knew all about death and lost. This was something, I have no wish to go through again. Not yet anyway. But is Nick the right man for me. A man who fought his own demons, the only way he knew how.
